SPCA Chili Cookoff
The first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was organized in England in 1824, primarily to stop carriage horse abuse before the invention of automobiles. Horses were driven through frigid winters and blistering summers, often with little food, water, and rest. Carriage drivers were only interested in making as much money as they could, and would beat the horses if they refused to pull the carriages.
The SPCA helped to pass laws that regulated the carriage horse business, and the Society soon expanded to include dogs and other animals in its fight against cruelty. The first American SPCA was started in 1866 in New York. Today, there are SPCAs all across the United States and around the world committed to ending animal abuse.
The mission of SPCA International is to raise awareness of the cruelty and abuse to animals to a global level, to teach and foster good pet parenting practices, and to promote spay and neuter programs around the world with the goal of eradicating the need to euthanize healthy and adoptable companion animals of all ages.
The Aiken SPCA has been accomplishing this mission since 1935, through internal and outreach programs that work to achieve these goals. They maintain their success through the dedicated efforts of volunteers and the generous contributions and support of the community.
On March 1, 2008, GTI Transport and Teresa’s Mexican Restaurant, both of Aiken, sponsored the First Annual SPCA Chili Cook Off to raise money for the Aiken SPCA. Augusta Animal Emergency was proud to be a participant in the community outreach program that helped raise much needed funds for the organization. Without the SPCA, pets like “Boo-Boo Bear” would not have found a special home with loving parents. For more information, to volunteer, or to make a donation, visit http://www.aikenSPCA.com.
